A dark, brooding style, this red evokes hibiscus, raspberry, cherry and spice flavors, with an underlying iron note. It's dense, yet focused and vibrant, with ample fruit to stand up to its muscular structure. Balanced and expressive now, yet this needs time. Best from 2027 through 2048.
A lovely, graceful white, with succulent acidity enlivening notes of ripe pear, anise and crushed almond, showing hints of Meyer lemon peel, vanilla and white blossoms. Long and well-knit, with a tang of salinity emerging to linger on the finish. Drink now through 2030.
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Camp Gros Martinenga is ripe with a bit darker tone, offering notes of anise, grenadine, and cedar. It is medium-bodied, with a firm core of fruit and earth, as well as freshness and a ripe tannin structure. Its notes pf tea leaves, bergamot, and red cherry are long on the palate. Hold this another year and drink 2024-2040. |
This wine shows its MGA name "Roncaglie" on the front label for the first time. That's because Vietti recently acquired additional land in this cru site. The total holdings now span two hectares of vines. The 2018 Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria is made as if it were a Barolo (instead of a Barbaresco) and is released one year after its peers. It shows tart fruit and dried cranberry with some mild spice and tarry smoke from two years in large oak casks. Exactly 5,026 bottles were made.
A multifaceted red, featuring cherry, strawberry, floral, iron, tobacco and oak spice aromas and flavors. Just when you think this is ready to enjoy, the firm, dense structure engages, leaving a stiff, if long, finish. Best from 2025 through 2042.
The 2018 Oratorio di San Lorenzo Riserva is reserved yet wonderfully floral, almost dusty in character, with pepper-tinged strawberries and roses offset by a hint of sweet spice. This is silky and pure in style with a pretty inner sweetness complicated by a core of brisk acidity as perfumed inner florals and depths of dark red fruit settle upon the senses. It tapers off lightly structured with sweet tannins yet finishes long, leaving a staining of tart wild berries and savory spice to taper off slowly. While quite finessed, an underlying power here will promise a long and steady maturation. That said, while already in the bottle for two years, the 2018 is still almost a year away from being released.
This red is finely woven, with cherry and black currant fruit shaded by floral, mineral and black pepper aromas and flavors. Supple and fluid, with superb balance and vibrant acidity driving the fruity aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2045. From Italy.
